Class Information Medical Assistant Apprenticeship (MAA)

Accelerate your journey to becoming a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) with this comprehensive 8.5-month program tailored for employed health care professionals like you. Apply the knowledge and skills you gain in class directly to your workplace, supervised by a clinical preceptor. Earn the title of Certified Clinical Medical Assistant through the National Healthcareer Association.

Dive into direct patient care and master essential clinical and administrative skills crucial for success in this high-demand field. As a Medical Assistant, you'll play a vital role in providing clinical services to patients and ensuring the smooth operation of health care facilities. Classes are held two evenings per week, allowing you to work in your health care facility. You earn while you learn.

Prerequisites

  • Age Requirement: 18 or older
  • Employment and Preceptor: Current employment in a healthcare facility and a clinical preceptor who is an RN, LPN, or experienced Medical Assistant is required. A list of employers is available upon request.
  • Email Address Required: You must provide a unique email address during registration and be able to regularly access it. The email address you use must not be used by another student.
  • Computer and Internet Access: Regular access to a Windows-based laptop and high-speed internet to complete the course is required. Chromebooks and cell phones are not compatible with the online portion of this course.
  • State Requirements: Verify with your state's healthcare regulatory board that this program meets the certification requirements in your state.
  • High School Completion or GED: A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate of completion is required for National Healthcareer Association certification.

Location

  • In-Person: Meet twice weekly at the North Idaho College Workforce Training Center in Post Falls, ID for instruction and hands-on practice.
  • Online Coursework: Complete additional coursework in the Canvas online classroom.
  • Live Online Option Outside the Greater Coeur d'Alene Area: Live Zoom instruction is available with prior approval for those outside the greater Coeur d'Alene area; contact Health Careers by emailing WTC_HealthCareers@nic.edu or calling (208) 769-3497.

Registration

  • Begin the Registration Process: Send your contact information and your employer facility name and contact details to the Health Careers team by calling (208) 769-3221 or emailing wtc_healthcareers@nic.edu.
  • Preceptor Coordination: The Health Careers team will work with you to determine the clinical preceptor you will work with at your facility.

Class Notes

  • Registration Includes: Textbooks, online study programs, supplies, exam fees.
  • Dress Code: Cherokee brand Hunter green scrub top and black pants by week three.
  • Venipuncture: Due to the nature of this class, please understand that venipuncture practice on students will be expected. Don’t worry; there will be plenty of simulation practice prior.
  • Drug Screening: Random screens may occur; You must demonstrate clearance to remain enrolled.
  • Not Enrolling in the Apprenticeship? If you do not want to participate in the apprenticeship, you may enroll in the Medical Assistant class instead.
