Class Information Medical Assistant Apprenticeship (MAA)

Medical Assistant in Sandpoint! Open to students throughout North Idaho and Northwestern Montana.

Accelerate your journey to becoming a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) with this comprehensive 8.5-month program for employed healthcare professionals. Apply the knowledge and skills you gain in class directly to your workplace under supervision of a clinical preceptor. Earn the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant credential through the National Healthcareer Association.

Build direct patient care, clinical, and administrative skills needed for this high-demand field. As a Medical Assistant, you play a vital role in patient care and daily clinic operations. Classes meet two evenings per week so you can keep working in your healthcare facility. You earn while you learn.

Prerequisites

Age Requirement: You must be 18 or older to register.
Employment and Preceptor: Current employment in a healthcare facility and a clinical preceptor who is an RN, LPN, or experienced Medical Assistant is required; employer list available upon request.
Email Address Required: You must provide a unique email address during registration and be able to regularly access it. The email address you use must not be used by another student.
Computer and Internet Access: Regular access to a Windows-based laptop and high-speed internet to complete the course is required. Chromebooks and cell phones are not compatible with the online portion of this course.
State Requirements: Verify with your state's healthcare regulatory board that this program meets the certification requirements in your state.
High School Completion or GED: A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate of completion is required for National Healthcareer Association certification.
- Homeschool Documentation: Provide a signed certificate of completion from a parent or guardian; printable templates available by visiting Responsible Homeschooling printable templates.
- No Diploma or GED: If you do not have a high school diploma, GED, or homeschool certificate, you may still be eligible; contact the Workforce Training Center Health Careers to discuss options.

Location

In-Person: Meet twice weekly at the North Idaho College Sandpoint Center in Sandpoint, ID, for instruction and hands-on practice.
Online Coursework: Complete additional coursework in the Canvas online classroom.
Live Online Option Outside the Sandpoint Area: Live Zoom instruction with prior approval for those outside the Sandpoint/Ponderay area; contact Health Careers.

Registration

Begin the Registration Process: Send your contact information and your employer facility name and contact details to the Health Careers team by calling (208) 769-3221 or emailing wtc_healthcareers@nic.edu.
Preceptor Coordination: The Health Careers team will work with you to determine the clinical preceptor you will work with at your facility.

Class Notes

Registration Includes: Textbooks, online study programs, supplies, exam fees.
Dress Code: Cherokee brand Hunter green scrub top and black pants by week three.
Venipuncture: Due to the nature of this class, please understand that venipuncture practice on students will be expected. Don’t worry; there will be plenty of simulation practice prior.
Drug Screening: Random screens may occur; clearance required to remain enrolled.
Not Enrolling in the Apprenticeship: If you do not want to participate in the apprenticeship, you may enroll in the Medical Assistant class instead.
