Phlebotomy Technician Externship

Class Information

Gain valuable on-the-job training while preparing for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Certification. Once your eligibility application is accepted, you will be placed in an unpaid externship for 100 hours in a local lab. Upon successful completion, you will be able to sit for the ASCP certification exam and include the experience on your resume for employment.

Prerequisites

• Successful completion of a Phlebotomy Technician program within the last 12 months.
• A background check (ACRANET), drug screen (PAML), and OIG search are needed before you can be cleared for placement.
• Liability/Risk waiver is required.
• Immunizations and health screening tests are required at certain externship sites.
  • Potential Immunizations include:
    • MMR,
    • Hepatitis B,
    • PPD testing within a 12-month period,
    • flu shot, and
    • either chicken pox immunization or past illness.
  • There is special paperwork/procedures for Valley Hospital and Heritage Health.
• Other requirements may include proof of health coverage and the purchase of professional liability insurance coverage.

Application approval is required prior to placement.

• Registration fee includes a background check, drug screen, and onboarding fee.

• Clinical assignments are scheduled on a full-time basis and may require up to 50 hours a week for 2-3 weeks.
  • Exact dates and times of the externship are to be determined based on both the student and externship site schedules.
• Many employers perform pre-employment screenings, such as criminal history, drug screening, driving record, and credit checks. It is the responsibility of the student to verify that they are employable in their preferred occupation.
