Class Information

Heavy equipment operators provide the necessary skills for any project that requires moving and transporting heavy materials or any kind of earthmoving. Operators work on regular construction building jobs, as well as in infrastructure (roads, bridges, and ports), mining, and timber. This three-year program will guide trainees through 144-plus hours of related instruction annually, covering theoretical and hands-on training on heavy equipment, civil blueprint reading, soils, and paving. Students must also complete 4000-6000 hours of on-the-job learning.
 
 CORE Pre-Apprenticeship for Heavy Equipment
must be taken at the same time as this course.
 

Prerequisites

  • Unique Email Address: Each student must have a unique email address for registration.
  • Computer and Internet Access: Regular access to a computer with high-speed internet capabilities is required
  • Age Requirement: Must be 16 years old or older
    • 16 and 17-year-old apprentices are required to enter a STRAP agreement with parental approval and signature.
  • CORE Pre-apprenticeship for Heavy Equipment is taken simultaneously with Heavy Equipment Apprenticeship Year 1. It is a requirement to pass both CORE Pre-apprenticeship and Heavy Equipment Apprenticeship Year 1 before moving to Year 2.

Location

Hybrid Class: Heavy Equipment Apprenticeship is a hybrid course. Apprentices meet as scheduled at the North Idaho College Parker Technical Education Center in Rathdrum, ID for instruction, labs, and exams. Additional coursework is completed online in the Canvas classroom.

Attendance Requirement

  • 100% attendance is mandatory.

Dress Code

  • Required attire: long-sleeved shirts, durable, long pants, work boots, and outerwear suited to the weather (snow, rain, or shine).

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • PPE provided: hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, high-visibility vest, and work gloves.
  • If you prefer to use your own equipment, have it inspected by the instructor before use.

Class Preparation

  • Bring: notepad, writing utensils, water bottle, and snacks
  • Lunch: be prepared for a 1-hour lunch break
  • A break room with refrigerator/freezer and microwave is available, along with vending machines.

Parking

  • A parking permit is required and will be provided in class.
  • Arrive 15 minutes early for the first class to receive your permit.
