Class A Commercial Driver's License Training July 2024

In just a few short weeks, you could be earning an excellent living as a Class A commercial vehicle driver! This four-week course includes one week of convenient, self-paced online theory, followed by up to three weeks of fast-paced skills training in lab and open road settings. Upon completion, students take a CDL skills test with an Idaho DOT-approved tester. Course fee includes: DOT physical and drug screen vouchers, Class A theory, HazMat theory, Class A skills training, and one Idaho skills test voucher.

NIC is an FMCSA-registered, ELDT-compliant training provider.

Students will be required to provide the following documentation by the orientation date for their class:
  • Idaho Class A Commercial Learners Permit (with Airbrakes, and Combination endorsements)
  • Current valid Idaho Driver’s License
  • Driving Record for the past 3 years
  • DOT Physical Exam and Drug Screen (Voucher provided)
Students are responsible for fees associated with permitting. Students should contact their local Department of Licensing with questions on how to obtain their Commercial Learner’s permit before the course begins.
  • Theory begins the day the class starts and students will have 4 days to complete the required modules.
  • A mandatory in-person orientation is held 5 – 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday after the class starts at the NIC Parker Technical Education Center, 7064 W. Lancaster, Rathdrum, Idaho 83858 (map).
  • Upon completion of the training, students will be signed off by the instructors, and the Workforce Development team will assist students in scheduling their skills test in Idaho. Testing will be scheduled at the state proctor’s earliest convenience.

Please read: 

At this time, North Idaho College is only accepting Idaho residents into the Class A Commercial Driver’s Training program. Please call the Workforce Development team at 208-769-3264 with questions about eligibility for residents of other states.

At the start of theory and skills training, students will need to:
  • Have registered and paid for the program in full (or have an approved payment plan arrangement)
  • Have completed all prerequisite documentation that is required of CDL students
  • Complete a DOT physical exam and drug screen at NIC’s approved provider (fees covered by the program)
  • Be in possession of a valid Idaho Class A Commercial Learner’s Permit with no restrictions related to equipment (must be able to train on equipment with airbrakes) (student is responsible for fees associated with permitting – contact the local DMV for info on how to obtain your permit)
Students from Idaho aged 18-20 are welcome to participate in this CDL program; however, Idaho does not permit drivers under the age of 21 to drive in an interstate capacity at this time.
