Class Information: Log Scaler Training

Log scalers, primarily employed in sawmills, use industry tools and calculations to determine the net volume of harvested logs. In this online, self-study course, students learn species identification, log volume calculations, and rules for identifying defects—the three key skills needed to determine net volume. No prior timber industry experience is required, but students should have a solid grasp of basic math and fractions. This course prepares students for the Idaho Log Scalers License Exam. Idaho law requires log scalers to be licensed.

The Idaho State Licensing Exam is administered by the Idaho Board of Scaling Practices. Exam fees are not included in this training.

For testing dates, fees, and field training workshops, visit the Idaho Board of Scaling website.
